Warmed oil falls onto the forehead and scalp during shirodhara. The mind and nervous system are primarily affected, as the oil falls onto the Ajna Marma, the point on the forehead considered in Ayurveda to have the highest concentration of nerves in the body.

Shirodhara stimulates the pineal gland which produces the hormone melatonin. Melatonin regulates the wake/sleep cycles of the body. From the view of Ayurveda,shirodhara lowers the Vata dosha, the fundamental principle that comprises the air and space elements in the body. When one’s Vata dosha is out of balance, one may experience insomnia, anxiety, fear and insecurity.

Shirodhara reestablishes the functional integrity between these three doshic subtypes and thus helps alleviate stress.

“One who applies oil on his head regularly helps in headache, baldness, graying of hair, nor does his hair fall. Strength of his head and forehead is especially enhanced; his hair becomes black, long and deep-rooted; his sense organs work properly; the skin of his face becomes brightened; applying oil on the head produces sound sleep and happiness.

In clinical studies, shirodhara has shown marked potential to alleviate insomnia, reduce anxiety, and diminish high blood pressure.

Traditionally, Shirodhara has been applied to treat insomnia, memory loss, headaches, mental tension (anxiety, worry, stress), exhaustion, emotional imbalance, various disorders of the head, neck, eyes, ears, nose and nervous system, and certain skin diseases.

Some of the benefits or Shirodhara include: stimulating the endocrine system, activating and balancing the pituitary and pineal glands (for hormonal upsets) -simulating pleasure neurotransmitters (for depression, mood swings, emotional insecurities and addictions of various kinds) -helps many diseases connected with the head, neck, eyes, ears, nose and throat -helps various disease of the nervous system -improves digestion and the health of the skin and hair -rejuvenates face by removing worry lines -clears inertia and negativity, grounding a person and giving positive feelings -brings spiritual awakening and increased intuition.

Shirodhara is a shamana treatment, often prescribed during the rasayana rejuvenation period after pancha karma (the traditional Ayurvedic five actions of detoxification), or any time calming and re-integrating the nervous system is a top priority.

Ayurvedic texts state that Shirodhara activates the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, opens the 6th and 7th chakras, heightens the senses and increases faith, intuition and overall spiritual awareness.
